The size and scope of unemployment benefits for qualified, laid-off individuals is expanded due to COVID-19 to add a $300 per week payment to existing unemployment Insurance amounts through Sept. 6, 2021. This $300 is in addition to the existing weekly state unemployment benefit, and federal pandemic unemployment programs. Those programs have been expanded to cover self-employed, gig workers and contractors who do not usually qualify for unemployment benefits. In some cases, small-business owners now will qualify for unemployment benefits.

In addition, for those who need it, the American Relief Plan provides the maximum duration of PUA benefits from 50 to 79 weeks.
